Papermill Falls, An Unsung Beauty
I was walking through the park on a warm summer day, the kind that hums with life and smells like sunlight steeped in leaves. I hadn’t planned on taking any photographs—my camera was tucked lazily in my bag, more out of habit than intention. I was simply wandering, letting the soft breeze push at my shoulders and the scent of damp earth mingle with the sweetness of wildflowers and sunbaked grass.
The sound of rushing water threaded faintly through the trees, a soft punctuation beneath birdsong and the distant creak of branches. I rounded a bend in the trail, expecting nothing more than another patch of dappled light… and then the world opened.
Before me, the falls unfurled—Papermill Falls, but not the Papermill Falls I knew. The water spilled in wide, silken sheets, shimmering like brushed silver beneath the sun. It rolled over the dark rock in delicate steps, each layer glowing, each motion purposeful. Above it, the old graffitied bridge stood like a relic of some forgotten age, rugged and weathered, yet strangely noble. It was a sight so sudden and so striking that I actually stopped mid-step, breath caught in my throat.
I hadn’t come out to photograph anything that day, but the moment gripped me. Instinct kicked in.
I dropped my bag to the ground, unzipped it with shaky fingers, and pulled out my gear. The air tasted like minerals and cool spray. A thin mist brushed my face as I moved closer. I tried framing the shot—tilted one way, crouched another, stepped off the trail a bit. But nothing. The angle was wrong. The people lingering by the bridge wandered in and out of the composition, chatting and laughing. The narrow trail pressed at my heels. I couldn’t get the clean foreground I wanted. I tried again. And again. Still nothing sang.
Frustration prickled at the back of my neck. Maybe today wasn’t the day.
So I packed up and kept walking.
The trail curved behind a cluster of maples, their leaves whispering secrets overhead. The sound of the falls softened, then grew again as I descended the path. A chipmunk darted across the trail. Sunlight filtered in thick golden beams, smelling of pine sap and warm moss. And then, almost too suddenly, the forest opened once more.
This time, I was alone.
The chatter of earlier hikers had dissolved. All I could hear was the falls—steady, confident, ancient. The air grew cooler near the water, laced with the metallic tang of the stream and the gentle sweetness of summer. I stepped forward, and there it was: a perfect view. An angle I hadn’t known existed. The cascade revealed itself like a mythic creature—wider, bolder, more luminous than before.
I lifted my camera.
The world shrank to the frame.
The soft roar of the falls vibrated through my ribcage. My hands steadied. The composition clicked into place: the layers of water, the textured stone, the old bridge rising above like a sentinel, the canopy of trees glowing under cloud-spotted sky.
I pressed the shutter.
For a moment, everything paused—the kind of stillness that feels earned, like crossing a threshold in a hero’s journey you didn’t know you were on. I reviewed the image.
And there it was.
The photograph I never expected, never planned, never even knew I wanted until the forest handed it to me. A gift. A dream realized. My own small treasure born from a chance turn in a summer walk through Avon.
Papermill Falls, captured in a way I’d never seen it—and one I now love sharing with others, hoping they feel even a flicker of the magic I felt when the woods decided to reveal its secret view.
