Chasing Light in Wayne County: A Photographer’s Guide to My Home Region

Wayne County isn’t just where I live—it’s where I learned to see. Every shoreline path along Lake Ontario, every orchard row glowing in autumn, every waterfall tucked between quiet towns has helped shape my work behind the lens. When I photograph this region, I’m not just documenting a landscape. I’m telling the story of a place that continues to inspire me daily.

Wayne County is a blend of historic villages, rolling farmland, dramatic lakefront cliffs, and hidden natural pockets that feel worlds away from the busy highways that run past them. It’s a region defined by:

📍 Sodus Point: Sunrise and Lake Light

Sodus Point is a gift to photographers. The lighthouse stands bold against the horizon, the pier adds leading lines that draw you into the frame, and Lake Ontario’s mood can shift from calm pastels to storm-dark drama.

Best time to shoot: sunrise for soft tones, golden hour for warm reflections, and any storm front for dramatic skies.

📍 Chimney Bluffs State Park: The Natural Cathedral

The bluffs are iconic—towering spires of clay carved by wind and water. They’re a reminder of how wild this region can be. Photographers will find incredible contrast between the jagged formations and the open lake.

Tip: Visit during the off-season or early morning to avoid crowds and capture untouched trail scenes.

📍 Wolcott Falls: A Quiet Gem

Right in the Village of Wolcott, the falls are a compact but beautiful cascade tucked in a small town park. I’ve photographed them in all seasons, and each time the character shifts—from spring flow to icy winter structures.

📍 Palmyra, Lyons and the Erie Canal

Wayne County is apple country at heart. Long rows of trees create natural symmetry, while farm buildings and open fields capture the spirit of rural New York.

Tip: Sunrise fog over farmland is one of my favorite sights—if you see low-lying mist forming, grab your camera and go.
