Chasing Light in Wayne County: A Photographer’s Guide to My Home Region
Wayne County isn’t just where I live—it’s where I learned to see. Every shoreline path along Lake Ontario, every orchard row glowing in autumn, every waterfall tucked between quiet towns has helped shape my work behind the lens. When I photograph this region, I’m not just documenting a landscape. I’m telling the story of a place that continues to inspire me daily.
Whether you’re a local photographer, a traveler passing through, or someone who simply loves the Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario shoreline, here’s my guide to photographing one of Upstate New York’s most underrated counties.
Why Photograph Wayne County?
Wayne County is a blend of historic villages, rolling farmland, dramatic lakefront cliffs, and hidden natural pockets that feel worlds away from the busy highways that run past them. It’s a region defined by:
Expansive orchards and vineyards that change character with every season
Lighthouses, harbors, and piers that glow at sunrise and sunset
Waterfalls and creeks shaped by centuries of glacial movement
Rural charm—barns, fields, and backroads that beg to be photographed
For me, it’s the diversity of scenes within just a short drive that keeps me constantly exploring.
My Favorite Wayne County Photography Spots
📍 Sodus Point: Sunrise and Lake Light
Sodus Point is a gift to photographers. The lighthouse stands bold against the horizon, the pier adds leading lines that draw you into the frame, and Lake Ontario’s mood can shift from calm pastels to storm-dark drama.
Best time to shoot: sunrise for soft tones, golden hour for warm reflections, and any storm front for dramatic skies.
📍 Chimney Bluffs State Park: The Natural Cathedral
The bluffs are iconic—towering spires of clay carved by wind and water. They’re a reminder of how wild this region can be. Photographers will find incredible contrast between the jagged formations and the open lake.
Tip: Visit during the off-season or early morning to avoid crowds and capture untouched trail scenes.
📍 Wolcott Falls: A Quiet Gem
Right in the Village of Wolcott, the falls are a compact but beautiful cascade tucked in a small town park. I’ve photographed them in all seasons, and each time the character shifts—from spring flow to icy winter structures.
Bonus: The short trail to the base offers multiple angles for composition.
📍 Palmyra, Lyons and the Erie Canal
Palmyra and Lyons bring together history, architecture, and peaceful waterway scenes. From canal boats to old brick factories and bridges, the area offers textures and lines perfect for storytelling photography.
📍 Orchards and Farmland Everywhere
Wayne County is apple country at heart. Long rows of trees create natural symmetry, while farm buildings and open fields capture the spirit of rural New York.
Tip: Sunrise fog over farmland is one of my favorite sights—if you see low-lying mist forming, grab your camera and go.
How I Approach Photography in Wayne County
1. Chase the Light, Not the Clock
Some of the best images I’ve taken in Wayne County came from unplanned detours. If the sky opens up over a field or the lake starts glowing at dusk, I stop. Let the landscape set the schedule.
2. Tell the Story of the Place
My goal isn’t just to take pretty pictures. I aim to capture the feeling of Wayne County—the quiet, the space to breathe, the sense of small-town community paired with big natural beauty.
3. Look for the Unexpected
A roadside creek. A barn lit by the glow of sunrise. Driftwood washed up on the shore. Wayne County rewards anyone willing to slow down and notice the details.
Photography Tips for This Region
Use polarizers to cut glare on water and enhance skies, especially along Lake Ontario.
Bring a tripod for waterfalls, sunsets, and nighttime shots at the harbor.
Weather is your friend—cloudy days bring soft light that works beautifully in orchards and forests.
Experiment with long exposures on the lake for dreamy water textures.
Winter photography here is stunning, but be prepared for wind and icy footing.
Why I Love Photographing My Home County
As a photographer, there’s something special about working where you live—where every place has a memory attached to it. Wayne County is woven into my creative identity: the small towns where I grew up visiting, the trails I explored with a camera long before I called myself a professional, and the landscapes that still push me to go outside no matter the weather.
This region deserves to be seen, celebrated, and shared. Through Beck Photo and Video, I hope to highlight its beauty and encourage others to explore it with fresh eyes.
